This pedigree when it comes to producing printer consumables is reflected in the Canon PG-540 and Canon CL-541.
The technology used by Canon and fellow printer manufacturer, HP, can be very similar when it comes to their printer cartridges. Whether it’s an inkjet cartridge or a toner cartridge, you will always see similarities across the two brands.
As a “printhead” cartridge, the Canon PG-540 and Canon CL-541 benefits from having a fresh printhead included with every cartridge sold. “Ink tank” cartridges don’t offer a new printhead with each cartridge and instead provide a tank containing your printer ink (this can make refilling cartridges a lot easier a process).
A key difference between the two brands is that Canon implement “page counting” on the chip technology used in their printer cartridges. This gives customers an indication of when their ink may run out as the chip will log how many pages have been printed.
The fact that this is a printhead cartridge may mean that the installation process may not be as simple as when replacing an ink tank cartridge but that doesn’t mean the results you get from your prints are not exceptionally good. In fact, the Canon PG-540 and Canon CL-541 offers quality prints with outstanding clarity.

Canon printers have no way of looking inside replacement cartridges or detecting fresh ink. Instead, the cartridge just monitors how many pages have been printed and the average page coverage since it was first installed into the printer.
From this information, your printer estimates the ink level of the cartridge and when it believes the ink level is running low/empty you will be presented with a message saying “Check Ink”, “Low ink” or 1686 or 1688 support codes will be shown. By estimating ink levels in this way, even an original Canon PG-540 ink cartridge will almost certainly have some ink left when your printer first warns you it is empty.
Canon printers allow you to continue printing with a single button press and will usually give this prompt in a prominent message once it detects that the cartridge may be empty. Simply hold down your printer’s STOP/RESET/RESUME button for five seconds and then release. Whilst the name with which the button is referred to may change depending on the model of printer, the symbol it is identified by will always remain the same (a circle with an upside down triangle inside).
